Context
Premier One is a film and TV streaming service available on the web, mobile and TV apps. In 2019, I worked on research into its existing experience, user journeys and opportunities for improvement. The findings informed children’s profiles with parental controls and later product decisions.
Find priorities in the existing experience.
The product already had an established brand, but its user flows needed a clearer design direction. I reviewed the existing experience and brought analytics into the design discussion to identify priorities for improvement.
Map what is already there.
I began with competitor research and reviewed adjacent products for useful patterns. This gave the team a starting point for discussing the existing experience and possible improvements.
Compare features and interaction patterns.
I compared competitors’ features and interaction patterns to identify gaps in the existing experience and options for the next version.
Different needs within the same household.
I created personas using the available analytics data. Family viewing emerged as an area to address: children needed a distinct experience, while parents needed control over the content available to them.
Discuss the journey across touchpoints.
I mapped the journey across key touchpoints to make user goals, friction and improvement opportunities easier for the team to discuss.
See how the product connects.
I mapped the product’s features and touchpoints to show how they connected and identify areas for further development.
Nine scenarios for different viewing contexts.
I developed nine usage scenarios to explore different goals and contexts. These were design scenarios, used to review likely paths, anticipate problems and discuss priorities with the product team.
Children's profiles in the later product.
The final design for kids' profiles in the app allows the choice between different avatars and the option to input a nickname. The screenshots are from the 2023 version of the app, but it's important to note that the initial research took place in 2019. I must clarify that the illustrations for the avatars and the background image are not my work.
Research that informed family-viewing features.
The research informed children’s profiles and parental controls. The screens above show the 2023 product, while my research took place in 2019. My contribution was the research and recommendations; the avatar illustrations and background artwork are not mine.
